Project: Development of an orthopaedic surgical simulator using 3D printing as 

part of the embodied learning experience of MMed students.

Service Level contracts for Orthopaedic Engineering Consulting Service, from 2021. 

In collaboration with the IBE we have formalised a system to generate income for the Orthopaedic 

3D Printing Lab through a consultation service aimed at industry partners and surgeons in private 

practice. 

 

Stellenbosch University Temporary Research assistance for 2021 

Towards: Orthopaedic 3D Printing Lab. 

Value: R20 000 made available to Mr Leon Kotze, MEngSc Biomedical Engineering student for his 

assistance in the Orthopaedic 3D Lab during 2021. 

 

Stellenbosch University Social Impact Grant, Nov 2020 

Towards: Orthopaedic 3D Printing Lab. 

Value: R100 000 

Project: Social Impact initiative. 

“Upgrading Infrastructure of the Medical 3D Printing Lab at the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in 

response to the COVID-19 pandemic”. 

Funds used for the acquisition of a new 3D printer for the lab with a workstation to 

ramp-up the manufacture of face shields for front line healthcare workers.
